Ten years ago, entrepreneur Mr. Wang Guoping graciously invited me to serve as the Honorary Chairwoman of the Chinese Music Association of Southern California. Over the years, I have witnessed firsthand his generosity and selfless dedication. Through his unwavering financial support, he created a platform where musicians from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and across Asia could come together to perform, exchange ideas, and fully showcase their artistic talents.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022, Mr. Wang sadly passed away. His passing reminded me of the fragility of life and deepened my appreciation for the importance of preserving our cultural heritage. After his passing, our former Music Director, Mr. Renee Wu, assumed the responsibility of carrying forward Mr. Wang’s vision of promoting Chinese traditional music overseas. He was later succeeded by entrepreneur Mr. James Qiao, who comes from a distinguished musical family and has actively led the orchestra into mainstream communities, introducing the beauty of Chinese traditional music to a broader audience.

Since 2024, Ms. Landy Lee, a devoted advocate of traditional Chinese folk music, has served as the Orchestra Director. Under her leadership, the orchestra has not only performed in concert halls but has also reached schools, libraries, community festivals, and charitable events. Through these efforts, audiences from diverse cultural backgrounds have been able to experience the beauty of Chinese orchestral music, bringing renewed vitality and energy to the orchestra.

Over the past decade, I have been honored to witness the orchestra’s remarkable growth. I sincerely thank every musician for their dedication to promoting Chinese traditional music and preserving Chinese cultural heritage. I am also deeply grateful to all the friends and supporters of the Chinese Music Association of Southern California. It is through your generous sponsorship and unwavering support that the orchestra has continued to flourish and share the distinctive voice of Chinese orchestral music with our community.

I wish this evening’s concert every success!

Mary Su
