Instrument: erhu, gaohu
Yang Liu (劉揚) was born in Hunan Province, China, in 1973. He began studying the erhu under the guidance of his father, who recognized his exceptional talent for the instrument at the age of seven.
At age nine, Mr. Liu participated in the inaugural National Children’s Traditional Instrument Solo Competition and won a silver medal. In the early 1990s, he was admitted to the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where he studied erhu under the renowned music educator Professor Changfu Liu.
In 1995, he received a Special Award at the Fortitone Global Chinese Traditional Instrument Professional Erhu Competition. In 1999, he won First Prize at the National Tianhua Cup Erhu Competition.
Mr. Liu has performed as a member of several distinguished orchestras, including the China Broadcasting Chinese Orchestra, the China National Traditional Orchestra, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, and the Suzhou Chinese Orchestra.
Over the years, many of Mr. Liu’s students have been admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music and have gone on to become accomplished performers and educators in their own right.
