Mr. Tian started learning the bamboo flute at a young age. He graduated from the Harbin College of Arts in 1963. In 1964, he enlisted with the Shenyang Regional Military and worked as a cultural publicist. In 1970, he performed similar duties for the Shenyang Railroad and was a member of the Heilongjiang Provincial Orchestra Society. In 2006, he served as a judge for the first annual Liaoning Provincial Dizi Competition. After retirement, he immigrated to the U.S. and taught numerous students in the art of dizi playing. He also participated in many cultural events over the years.
